Important Types of USB Connectors

Important Types of USB Connectors

Out of all of the electronic connectors out there, USB connectors are probably one of the most known and used. They allow us to connect a variety of devices to one another: computers to printers; smartphones to wall chargers; storage devices to laptops; recording instruments to a camera; and so on. Without USB connectors we would still be using outdated equipment to go about our daily routine, which would slow productivity and economic growth. With this said, Oupiin Enterprise wants to help bring more awareness to such an important multiversal connector.

Different USB Plug Styles

Since its creation, USB connectors have gone through many alterations to ensure it maintains its relevancy within the world of technology. They were originally used to connect the most basic of devices: printers and servers. However, each of these variations work on different machinery, which is why it’s important you, the reader, understand what each option assists you with. Seeing as there are over 127 kinds of devices using USB connectors, one must identify the difference between each variation. Yes, the European Union passed a law ensuring there is a standardized USB connector from this point forward, but there are previous options working with specific kinds of equipment, gear, components, and much more still in use.

What Uses Micro USB Connectors?

Micro USB connectors are one of the newer innovations meant to help our daily routine. Thankfully, there are only four parts within the object one needs to understand: the plug, the housing, the contacts, and the printed circuit board (PCB). Being as they are 10-11 mm wide, instead of the common 15 x 21 millimeter USB measurements, it’s no surprise they are primarily used for smartphones, digital cameras, GPS devices, MP3 players, and printers. However, it’s important to note these are for more recent iterations, which is why you should carefully review  the instructions before buying a new cable or connector. After all, the older USB variations still exist and are frequently used.

Pros and Cons of USB 2 Connectors

USB 2.0 connectors are compatible with most kinds of USB ports, but this doesn’t mean it will operate at the same speed as, for example, USB 3.0 connectors. This 2.0 version can only operate at the maximum level it was made for, which is around 480 Mbps. However, seeing as there are less wires—about four—being used to create these cables and connectors, they are much cheaper to purchase and replace. Additionally, they are shown to be longer than USB 3.0 connectors: five meters rather than three meters, respectively. Although, they can only provide 500 mA, which is lower than the 900 mA USB 3.0 connectors can handle. But, this also means it won’t overload your device and can provide a faster charge than its cousins.

Are USB 3.0 Socket Connector the Best?

Despite USB 3.0 connectors being a little pricier than USB 2.0 connectors, they do have many positive advantages. For instance, it allows an easier time for idling when connected to a device charging, it won’t damage the equipment connected were it to be an older variation, and will transfer data much more efficiently than its predecessors. Unfortunately, there is the slight problem of devices not being configured for this option, especially since there are newer and better USB connectors out there.

The Power of the USB Type-C Style

There is nothing more frustrating than trying to insert a USB cable into a port and not being able to connect them because its facing the wrong way. You flip it over, try again, and still aren’t doing it right. You keep repeating this process only to get more annoyed with what is happening until you give up on the whole process. Fortunately, this doesn’t need to happen anymore because of the seamless interface USB-C connectors possess.

One of the biggest perks of USB-C connectors and cables is the fact it doesn’t matter what side is facing up, it will plug into the port of your laptop, television, and other devices utilizing this component. Additionally, this kind of connector has a dielectric withstanding voltage of AC 100V, possess a 5.0 AMP current rating for VBUS and GND, and have been shown to be able to face no damage during mating or use because of its intense durability. It even contains a contact resistance change of 10 mΩ max. Ultimately, USB-C electronic connectors are going to be the leading USB variant used because of its adaptability, strength, and usability.
